Notes: ABSTRACT: The chemical composition of the waxy substances secreted by a scale insect, Didesmococcus koreanus Borchsenius (Homoptera: Coccidae) was studied. Infrared spectra (lR) and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) technologies were applied. The results showed that the infrared spectra of the waxes respectively collected from the younger nymphs, female adults and male nymphs were similar in general. It indicated that their chemical function groups were similar in kinds and contents. They were mainly composed of saturated and unsaturated long chain hydrocarbon (alkanes), higher fatty acids, higher fatty alcohols and other compounds with aromatic ring structures. However, some distinct differences in the three wax samples could be easily seen by infrared spectra. 12 components were detected in the wax samples of the younger nymphs by Gc/MS. The results using the two methods corroborated each other.
