Abstract: Five historically and culturally important scale insect red dyes were investigated by high performance liquid chromatography, diode-array detection and data manipulation: Dactylopius coccus, Kermes vermilio, Porphyrophora polonica, P. hamelii and Kerria lacca; several new dye components and precursors were found and spectrally characterized in ultraviolet and visible light.
