Stepaniuk, K., Ratkiewicz, M., & Lagowska, B. 2008 Taxonomic position of Parthenolecanium species in Poland based on morphology and molecular data.. Proceedings of the XI International Symposium on Scale Insect Studies, Oeiras, Portugal, 24-27 September 2007. ISA Press Lisbon, Portugal 322 pp.
Notes: Four Parthenolecanium species (P. corni, P. rufulum, P. fletcheri and P. pomeranicum) living on woody host plants in Poland are morphologically very similar and their identity is not well established. The paper presents the results of morphological and molecular studies using samples from Parthenolecanium specimens collected on Caragana, Prunus, Robinia, Quercus, Taxus and Thuja. Fourteen measured and twelve meristic characters were selected for biometric study and statistical analysis of results which were made by applying Analysis of Variance (ANOV A) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Also molecular data (352 bp sequences mtDNA) from 115 Parthenolecanium specimens collected on the above mentioned host plants are presented and a molecular phylogeny of Parthenolecanium species living in Poland is suggested. The results of morphological and molecular investigations suggest that the specimens of P. pomeranicum living on Taxus in Wierzchlas, Poland (source of type material for Kawecki, 1954), represent only a host race of P. corni. However two separate valid species exist on Thuja and Quercus, i.e. P. fletcheri on Thuja and P. rufulum on Quercus.
