Notes: There are about 20 species of the genus Pistacia. A map is presented of the Mediterranean basin, showing the areas in which P. lentiscus grows. Although the shrub prefers a siliceous soil, it can tolerate alkaline conditions. It does not normally grow at altitudes above 600-700 m. Several varieties and the naturally occurring hybrid P. lentiscus X P. terebinthus are recognised. Pathogens and insects attacking the plant include Fomes rimosus, Septoria pistacina, Ceroplastes rusci, C. sinensis, Parlatoria oleae, Aploneura lentisci and Eriophyes stefanii [Aceria stefanii]. The plant can be used for animal fodder, production of essential oils, medicinal purposes, and tannin and dye production, and as a rootstock for P. vera.
