Panis, A. 1975 Une pulvinaire de la canne á sucre d'introduction récente au Maroc (Homoptera, Coccoidea, Coccidae). [A sugar-cane cottony cushion scale recently introduced into Morocco (Homoptera, Coccoidea, Coccidae).]. Revue de Zoologie Agricole et de Pathologie Vegetale 74(4): 147-153.
Notes: Among sugar-cane insects recently introduced into Morocco is Pulvinaria elongata Newst. which, although a minor pest at present, may reach outbreak levels in the dry climate of North Africa, which elsewhere tends to kill the natural enemies of this scale; careful observation of population numbers on infested sites is advised. P. elongata belongs to a group of closely related species on wild and cultivated Gramineae, the others being P. iceryi (Sign.), P. longisqua De Lotto, P. saccharia De Lotto and P. tenuivalvata (Newst.). Characters distinguishing the adult females of P. elongata from the adult females of the first three of these are given. Natural enemies of P. elongata found so far in Morocco are the encyrtid Metaphycus flavus (How.), the aphelinid Coccophagus cowperi Gir. and the tetrastichid Tetrastichus ceroplastae (Gir.), which are parasites, and the coccinellid Scymnus subvillosus var. canariensis Woll. (Pullus subvillosus canariensis) and the cecidomyiid Lestodiplosis aonidiellae Harris, which are predators, the last species being known to attack many scale insects in Morocco.
