Remarks
- Systematics: Syntype of Ripersia cinti Balachowsky, 1933 and holotype of Trionymus pilosus Goux, 1941 differ from the usual females of T. radicum in having a smaller number of multilocular pores and more numerous, thick flagellate setae on both sides of the body. the same characters were found on females from Switzerland. All 3 of these were collected in high mountains, above 2000 m. Danzig and Gavrilov-Zimin, 2015 considered this variation in characters to be ecological and so they considered both R. cinti and T. pilosus as alpine forms of T. radicum. Pseudococcus ferganensis, T. singularis and T. kurilensis (=T. insularis) differ from the usual T. radicum in having a smaller number of dorsal tubular ducts and more numerous multilocular pores in the marginal zone of the venter, but Danzig and Gavrilov-Zimin considered these characters to be within the normal variation of the species. Although the type material has been lost, they also determined that according to the original description and figure of Pseudococcus latvicus, this species does not differ from T. radicum.
- Structure: Female body elongate-oval, up to 3.5 mm long. Antennae 6-7 segmented. Legs normally developed; hind coxae with numerous translucent pores. Anal apparatus complete. Both pairs of ostioles present. Circulus usually one, very small, but sometimes two small circuli present. Multilocular pores forming transverse rows and bands on V-VIII abdominal sternites, present along the margin of the venter and rarely present on abdominal tergites. (Danzig & Gavrilov-Zimin, 2015)
- Biology: Occurring at the base of grasses and in nests of ants, Ponera contracta and Lasius niger.
- General Remarks: Description and illustration of adult female by Williams (1962) and by Kwon et al. (2003a). Good description and illustration of the adult female of the junior synonym, Trionymus pilosus given by Goux (1941a). Good description and illustration of the adult female junior synonym, Balanococcus singularis given by Schmutterer (1952a), Kosztarab & Kozár (1988F) and by Tang (1992). Danzig & Gavrilov-Zimin (2015) noted that the earlier report T. radicum from Bulgaria (Gavrilov & Trapeznikova, 2010) had been based on a misidentification of T. hamberdi. Good description and illustration of the adult female given by Danzig (1983) as Trinonymus insularis Danzig. Good description of the adult female given by Tang (1992).
