accepted valid name
Remarks
- Systematics: Koteja (2000) assigned this genus, based on male and female morphology, to a separate family, Steingeliidae.
Gullan & Sjaarda (2001) found that Steingelia and Stomacoccus were sister to all other Margarodidae sensu lato.
Hodgson & Foldi (2005, 2006) concluded that Steingelia was part of a clade that included Phenacoleachia, Puto, Pityococcus and Pseudococcidae, and placed Steingelia and Phenacoleachia among the "Non Maragarodoid species".
Main characteristics (adult female) of this genus are: derm membranous; antenna and legs well-developed; claw bearing 6-12 stout knobbed digitules; labium present or absent. Hodgson & Foldi (2006) accepted this genus in the family Steingeliidae.
Gavrilov-Zimin, 2018, resurrected the tribe Steingeliini to place the genus Steingelia in relation to other genera that he felt belonged in a subfamily of Xylococcinae (Araucaricoccus, Conifericoccus, Steingelia, and Stomacoccus)
- Structure: The adult females of Steingelia Nasonov (Steingeliidae) have 12 such digitules on the claw (Morrison 1928), but this is not usual.
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by Morrison (1928), Borchsenius (1950b), Danzig (1980b), Kosztarab & Kozar (1988F) and by Kosztarab (1996).
