Systematics: Subfamily Phenacoccinae
The status of Ripersiella has changed several times since it was described. It was regarded as a junior synonym of Rhizoecus by Hambleton (1974), Ben-Dov (1994), Jansen (2001, 2003) and by Williams (1998, 2004). Others, on the other hand considered Ripersiella a distinct genus, e.g. Williams & de Boer (1973), Matile-Ferrero (1976) and Tang (1992). Kozár & Konczné Benedicty (2002, 2003, 2004) resurrected Ripersiella and discussed in great details the reasons for this change. Danzig & Gavrilov-Zimin (2015) resurrected Hambleton’s (1974) concept, which regarded Ripersiella as a junior synonym of Rhizoecus, Szita, et al. (2020) disagree with them and consider Ripersiella to be a distinct genus, following many other authors (Hodgson 2020; Kozár & Foldi 2004; Kozár & Konczné Benedicty 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007; Matile-Ferrero 1976 and Tang 1992).
Structure: The genus Ripersiella is characterized by the combination of the following attributes: (i) antenna 5 or 6 segmented, (ii) legs well developed, (iii) dorsum and venter with bitubular ducts, and (iv) anal ring bearing 6 setae (Kozár & Konczné Benedicty 2007).
