Remarks
- Systematics: In North America, only 3 other species have abundant white powdery or cottony wax covering the dorsum: Neolecanium cornuparvum (Thro) on magnolias, some populations of Parthenolecanium pruinosum (Coquillett), which does not feed on pines, and Toumeyella parvicornis (Cockerell), which also feeds on pine trees. However, the white wax produced by N. cornuparvum, P. pruinosum and T. parvicornisis powdery, not woolly. Bombacoccus aguacatae Kondo, on avocados, produces abundant cottony wax, but this species has been reported only from Colombia. (Kondo, 2022b)
- Structure: Adult female in life broadly oval, convex, 2.0–2.5 mm across. Body bright or light yellow, yellowish, light brown, or orange-brown, entirely covered with abundant, fluffy snowwhite wax. First-instar nymph elongate oval, small, yellow to red, with well-developed antennae and legs. Second-instar nymph oval to elongate oval, yellowish, becoming only slightly convex. Male prepupa and pupa are found within a white wax puparium. Adult male brown, elongate oval, with well-developed antennae and legs; males of the first generation are wingless, whereas those in the second generation have well-developed wings. Slide-mounted adult female body 1.5–2.5 cm long, oval, elongate oval, or subcircular, margins smooth (or distorted when crowded at feeding site); anal cleft about 1/6 of body length. Dorsal derm membranous, becoming sclerotized in older specimens, with a sclerotized crescent around anal plates. Eyes not detected. (Kondo, 2022b)
- Biology: Quaintance (1897) studied the biology in Florida. Clarke et al., (1989a) studied the life history in U.S.A., Georgia coastal plain, on Pinus taeda, and observed two generations per year.
- Economic Importance: Infestations of this scale appeared on Pinus taeda in Georgia, USA, following five applications of pyrethroids (Clarke et al., 1992).
- General Remarks: Good definition and characters given by Williams & Kosztarab (1972), Hamon & Williams (1984), Hodgson (1994a) and by Kosztarab (1996).
