Keys
Remarks
- Structure: The nymphs are yellow and measure one to 1.5 mm long. The adult females are orange red and are covered with a grayish waxy substance that protects entire colonies made up of nymphs and females; these are usually found in the buds. The males are elongate; they host in twigs and branches, or in the crevices or cracks of the bark. They are grayish white. (Ahmed, 2012) Slide-mounted adult female body rounded, 1.0–1.5 mm long, with 2 rounded, very short or undeveloped anal lobes, each marked with 3–4 short setae; anal ring small, placed at the end of an invagination of body apex. Dorsum with scattered 8-shaped pores, more numerous along body margin. Venter with 8-shaped pores restricted to body margin and submargin. Antennae vestigial, each 1- or 2-segmented, bearing 5 short setae, legs absent. (Pellizzari, 2022)
- Biology: Two annual generations in Crete, Greece (Alexandrakis, 1980a). One annual generation in Sicily (Liotta & Sammartano, 1981). Pollinia pollini take refuge in the connecting point between buds and branches, in holes made by Phleotribus scarabaeoides (Coleoptera, Cucurlionidae) and in the crevices. (Haouas, et al., 2020)
Pollinia pollini does not produce pits on the host plant. Found under dead specimens of Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Hemiptera: Coccidae). Cucchi and Becerra (2015) speculate that this could be for protection against parasitoids. (Granara de Willink et al. 2023) - Economic Importance: A serious pest of olive in Crete, Greece and in Sicily (Liotta & Sammatrano, 1981). Has been accidentally introduced to California, USA and eradicated from several areas in the state (Armitage & McKenzie, 1952). Gill (1993) reported that it was not eradicated from several counties in California, USA, but its pest status was unknown.
- General Remarks: Adult female described and illustrated by Ferris (1955a), Habib (1957), Borchsenius (1960d) and by Gill (1993).
