Remarks
- Systematics: Adult female P. machili are characterised by: (i) seemingly always showing some asymmetry; (ii) dorsal setae short and curved, with a blunt apex; (iii) large dorsal pores in broad submedial bands; (iv) few (0–2) multilocular disc-pores in abdominal segment V; (v) slightly club-shaped stigmatic spines, and (vi) marginal ornamentation in the form of small thorn-like sclerotised triangles. Adult female P. machili are extremely similar to those of P. hainanense and P. neomaritimum but differ in having: (i) most structures about 20% larger; (ii) largest dorsal pores only about 3.0–3.5 μm wide and quite widespread; (iii) a long seta on ventral surface of each trochanter, and (iv) the anal plates clearly slightly longer than broad. Adult female P. machili are also extremely similar to those of P. planum. However, they differ in that: (i) the marginal ornamentation is quite different, that of P. machili consisting of large, shallow sclerotised patches alongthe margin, with 1–3 (usually 2 or 3) between two marginal setae, whereas the ornamentation on P. planum consists of small sclerotisations lying radially, each with a long “stalk”, and with about 8 between two marginal setae; and (ii) the four pairs of oval clear areas on the abdomen are distinct on P. machili but indistinct or absent on P. planum.
- Structure: Slide-mounted adult female. Body broadest posteriorly and rather pointed anteriorly mostly distinctly asymmetrical and rounded at both ends, broadest across abdomen. Length 2.25–2.5 mm, width 1.8–2.0 mm. (Hodgson & Williams, 2018) In life, adult female very dark brown or glossy black, lighter on margin and submarginal areas and stigmatic clefts, colour becoming intense in median area anterior to anal plates; anal plates light reddish. Body subcircular or asymmetrical and slightly deltoid, almost flat but slightly convex in the median area; dorsum covered with numerous minute pits and divided into irregular tessellations by narrow smooth bands, of which a single median band runs from anal plates towards head and 6 or 7 curved horizontal bands ramify from medial band to margin. Nymphs transparent yellow. (Joshi, et al., 2022)
- Biology: Often found adjacent to major leaf veins. (Joshi, et al., 2022)
- General Remarks: Good description and illustration of adult female by Tao et al. (1983), Tang (1991) and by Hodgson (1994a). Redescription and illustration in Hodgson & Williams, 2018.
