Paracoccus Ezzat & McConnell, 1956 (Pseudococcidae)Nomenclatural History
- Paracoccus Ezzat & McConnell 1956: 37. Type species: Pseudococcus burnerae Brain by original designation . accepted valid name
- Gossypina Salazar 1972: 293. Type species: Gossypina glauca Salazar by monotypy and original designation . junior synonym (discovered by WilliaGr1992: 292) Notes: Subjective synonym of Paracoccus.
Remarks
- Systematics: Subfamily: Pseudococcinae (Choi & Lee, 2022)
Paracoccus is a challenging genus taxonomically because there is considerable intraspecific variation in several character systems, making taxonomic delineation difficult (Williams & Granara de Willink, 1992).Williams & Granara de Willink (1992) showed that the type-species of Gossypina was a synonym of Paracoccus solani Ezzat & McConnell, and placed it as a subjective synonym of Paracoccus.
- Structure: Slide-mounted adult female usually broadly oval. Anal lobe usually developed, each with a ventral anal lobe bar either complete (extending from base of apical seta) or partial (extending from bar seta). Antennae each with 8 segments. (Moghaddam & Watson, 2022)
- Biology: The genus should include species whose main feature is the occurrence of a series of seventeen pairs of marginal cerarii, all normally built up with two spines and devoid of auxiliary setae, except on the anal lobe cerarii in which one or more auxiliary setae are always present. (De Lotto, 1964)
- General Remarks: Definition and characters by Ezzat & McConnell (1956), Williams (1985), Cox (1987), Williams & Watson (1988a), Williams & Granara de Willink (1992) and by Williams (2004a).
