Remarks
- Structure: Body of adult female up to 10 mm long and 5 mm wide, ovoid and yellow; body with soft, deep segmental folds; densely covered with long hair-like setae; characteristic enlarged fossorial (digging) forelegs have dark brown claws (Foldi, Chong & Watson in Kondo & Watson, 2022)
- Biology: This species is parthenogenetic living in zones of greatest root abundance of its host Vitis vinifera, usually at a depth of 46–60 cm. It can occur at depths of up to 120 cm. Under laboratory conditions, adult females emerged during mid and late summer (January and February), but only 10–16% of the cysts developed into females annually. Although cysts were detached from the host plant (Vitis vinifera), females emerged during four successive years from the same population. (de Klerk, 1980)
- Economic Importance: Margarodes vredendalensis feeds on the roots of grapevines. It has been added to the A1 lists of EPPO and Turkey, and is a quarantine pest for Jordan, but is not regarded as a quarantine pest by any other regional plant protection organization. Foldi, Chong & Watson in Kondo & Watson, 2022)
