Keys
Remarks
- Systematics: lsid:zoobank.org:act:2024A724-EAC6-4621-A824-AC781C3ED616 Macrodrilus bostrychus possess unique features that together, prohibit its placement in an extant or extinct family. These features include well developed compound eyes with many ommatidia, antenniferous tubercles, smooth, slender flagellomeres, extended apical lobes, venational patterns on the forewings, a series of long waxy filaments attached to the terminal abdominal tergite, a long endophallus that surpasses the length of the body and pellet-shaped spermatophores. (Poinar, 2020) The swollen membranous prescutum of Macrodrilus bostrychus is similar in shape to the membranous prescutum of Kukaspis usingeri Koteja & Poinar. The latter species is from Alaskan amber, which is approximately the same age as Burmese amber. However Kukaspis, which was placed in a separate family, the Kukaspididae, is characterised by lateral rows of six pairs of unicorneal eyes and a unique tail with four waxy filaments arising from the last abdominal tergite (Poinar, 2020).
- Structure: Head transverse, with large, spherical, protruding compound eyes with many ommatidia; two inconspicuous ocelli near reduced mouthparts; antennae 10-segmented, filiform, scape and pedicel short and thick; scapes attached to antenniferous tubercles; flagellomeres elongate, smooth; tarsi with up to 5 inconspicuous segments; prescutum bulb-like; wings smooth, membrane with unique pattern of lines and dots; halters short, humuli with terminal hook; abdominal spiracles present; terminal abdominal tergite with row of long white waxy filaments; endophallus extended, flexible, length longer than insect body; apical lobes extended; glandular pouches reduced; spermatophores roundish, pellet-like.(Poinar, 2020)
