The genus is most close to Poaspis in sharing the distribution of large ventral setae and the structure (sieve like) of the prevulvar pores. But, Luzulaspis differs from Poaspis in having lower numbers of ventral setae (especially interantennal setae) (much more in Poaspis), lower numbers of marginal setae which are also thinner (larger and more numerous in Poaspis (Koteja, 1979). (Caliskan, et al., 2015)
Hodgson (1994) proposed that members of Luzulaspis have no more than 30 well-developed, long ventral setae between the antennal bases. However, Tanaka, et al., 2021 have determined that this character state may not be a strict criterion for distinguishing the genera . They propose that the criterion should be looser than in Hodgson (1994); if the number of well-developed interantennal setae of the species is 33 or less, the species is considered to belong to Luzulaspis; but if the number is 35 or more, the species is considered to belong to Poaspis. Furthermore, possession of numerous dorsal setae within an area between the antennal bases and procoxae on the venter (about 20–40) (Koteja 1979a), and evenly scattered and comparatively long dorsal setae (about 20–40 μm on head) (Koteja 1978) are both character states exclusive to Poaspis. They suggest that the relationships between species assigned to Luzulaspis and Poaspis should be re-examined based on molecular phylogenetic analysis and evaluations of other potentially relevant morphological character states.
- Structure: The genus Luzulaspis is characterized by the following features: (i) flattened (rarely convex) body; (ii) well developed 8-segmented antennae; (iii) legs well developed, slender; (iv) claw digitules each with an apical knob about as wide as base of claw; (v) dorsal setae spinelike or hair-like (vi) tubular ducts numerous on entire dorsum except head and finally (vii) two spiracular setae. Ovisac elongate, almost parallel sided, white, 3–6 mm long, covering the female entirely. Postreproductive female sclerotized, shrinking and falling out of ovisac, except when parasitized. Teneral female elongate, parallel sided, rounded or slightly tapered at both ends, dorsum slightly convex, venter almost flat; usually yellowish with two red dorsal stripes (Kosztarab & Kozár, 1988).
