TThe adult females of Ventrispina resemble the female of Glabracoccus in having enlarged (spine-like) dorsal setae similar in shape to cerarian setae and with trilocular pores concentrated near the base of some setae, and two of the species have prominent ostioles. However, Ventrispina is part of the blue-black group of mealybugs that have coloured body pigments (Williams 1985), whereas Glabracoccus does not possess such pigments. Ventrispina species also have much smaller dorsal setae that are lanceolate, in contrast to the conical setae of GGlabracoccus, and all three species of Ventrispina have trilocular pores and a labium of typical mealybug shape, as well as 6-segmented antennae; in addition, two of the species have multilocular pores that are lacking in Glabracoccus. Ventrispina belongs to the pseudococcid subfamily Pseudococcinae, in which the adult females typically have capitate tarsal digitules, no claw denticle, no quinquelocular pores and antennae with fewer than nine segments (Hardy et al. 2008). Glabracoccus also fits well into this subfamily. In having prominent dorsal setae, Glabracoccus shows some resemblance to Neoclavicoccus from New Caledonia, Pedrococcus from Indonesia (Bali), Malaysia (Sabah), Madagascar, Mauritius and the Solomon Islands, and Pedronia from Sri Lanka. It is most likely that any similarity of Glabracoccus to the three non-Australian genera discussed above is due to convergence. (Gullan, 2021)
- Structure: Adult female in life mostly devoid of wax except for glassy filaments, each produced from a conical spine-like seta. On microscope slides, body of adult female ovoid and derm membranous except for light sclerotisation on anal lobes and around bases of a few large dorsal setae. Eyespots prominent. Antennae each with 7 segments. (Gullan, 2021)
